The Mediating Effect of Self-Transcendence on the Correlation Between Frailty and Life Satisfaction in the Elderly.

Journal of applied gerontology : the official journal of the Southern Gerontological Society March 25, 2026 Weitao Xia, Yingying Shi, Lemin Fang et al.

Among 1,192 adults aged 60 and older from villages and communities in Zhejiang Province, 29.4% were frail. Frailty was negatively linked to life satisfaction, while self-transcendence was positively linked to life satisfaction. Self-transcendence partially explained the connection between frailty and life satisfaction, accounting for 37.4% of the total effect. This suggests that fostering self-transcendence may help buffer the negative impact of frailty on life satisfaction, offering a low-cost target for interventions.
