Effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy vs. psychoeducational intervention on plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor and cognitive function in bipolar patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Frontiers in Psychiatry January 1, 2023 Diego Carracedo-Sanchidrian, Consuelo De Dios-Perrino, Carmen Bayon-Perez et al.

A randomized controlled trial compared Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) plus treatment as usual (TAU) against Psychoeducation plus TAU and TAU alone for cognitive functions and BDNF levels in bipolar disorder outpatients. Eighty-four patients were recruited (TAU = 10, Psychoeducation = 34, MBCT = 40). No significant differences between treatment groups were found. MBCT did not achieve better results than Psychoeducation or TAU. The authors suggest that the efficiency of Psychoeducation and TAU, along with the short duration of MBCT, may explain the lack of superior outcomes.
