Effects of mindfulness-based interventions on insight and stigma in patients with schizophrenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Frontiers in Psychiatry January 1, 2025 Xiaoxin Gao, Lixiu Wu, Guolin Jin et al.

Mindfulness-based interventions significantly improve insight and reduce stigma in people with schizophrenia. A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials and 2 quasi-randomized controlled trials involving 2,899 patients found that those receiving mindfulness-based interventions—including mindfulness-based stress reduction, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, group mindfulness therapy, and mindfulness-informed psychoeducation—showed substantially better insight and lower stigma compared to control groups. These effects may enhance treatment adherence, rehabilitation participation, and social functioning. The analysis used standardized mean differences and accounted for heterogeneity with random-effects models. Higher-quality, long-term follow-up trials are still needed to confirm and extend these findings.
